Prompts (#1-4)
#1 Give your thoughts on one or both of the following quotes.
“Photography
records the gamut of feelings written on the human face, the beauty of the
earth and skies that man has inherited, and the wealth and confusion man has
created. It is a major force in explaining man to man.” ~Edward Steichen
“I just think it's important to be direct and honest with people about why you're photographing them and what you're doing. After all, you are taking some of their soul.” ~Mary Ellen Mark
Please
respond to the following three quotes.
#2 “My portraits are more about me than they are about the people I photograph.” ~Richard Avedon.
#3 “You don't take a photograph, you make it.” ~Ansel Adams
#4 “All photographs are there to remind us of what we forget. In this - as in other ways - they are the opposite of paintings. Paintings record what the painter remembers. Because each one of us forgets different things, a photo more than a painting may change its meaning according to who is looking at it.” ~John Berger
Prompt 1
ReplyDeleteI agree with the quote by Edward Steichen. Photography allows us to record the beauty of our world and our fellow man and share it with the rest of the world in ways that can not be achieved by any other means.
Prompt 2
ReplyDeleteThis quote by Richard Avedon means his photos represent his thoughts, feelings, ideas and opinions, not those of the people he's taking photos of. He arranges his photos to suit his liking, not the liking of the subjects.
Prompt 3
ReplyDeleteThis quote by Ansel Adams means that truly great photographers do not simply take photos of their surroundings, they make them, finding or arranging subjects in ways that speak to them and tell an entertaining story
Prompt 4
ReplyDeleteThis quote means that paintings wholly show the painters perspective, but photos are of the real world, and so more open to the viewers interpretation.
I think the first two quotes are kind-of saying how a photo isn't just a photo, but much more. And the last three are basically saying what most photos are for like a purpose. Like feeling, memories, or capturing beauty.
ReplyDeleteI agree with John Berger reambering the old things. thats why I take photos I like to rember things even if the bad. And a photo may look one way to me and a another way to someone else.
ReplyDelete1. I agree with the quote by Edward Steichen , That`s basically why people take photographs. To show the emotions or tell a story.
ReplyDelete2. The quote by Richard Avedon is pretty interesting, I interpreted that he tries to put himself in the photo. An example of that would be trying to tell a story of yourself with other people.
3. Ansel Adams quote was pretty straight forward I guess he was trying to say that to take a photograph you have to have a purpose.
4.I honestly like John Berger s quote, he explains how photos are more important and are better value then paintings.
1. The quote, “Photography records the gamut of feelings written on the human face, the beauty of the earth and skies that man has inherited, and the wealth and confusion man has created. It is a major force in explaining man to man,” written by Edward Steichen perfectly expresses what a photo portrays. A photo expresses the objects, ideas, and things we can see, feel, experience, and witness. Things we feel are sometimes harder to show, by exemplifying it into an image it makes capturing that emotion so much easier. We can see when someone is feeling down. We can tell what mountains and seas look like, but we can’t exactly explain what it’s like to feel that emotion or see that landscape. An image gives you the very essence of what is going on at the time it is occurring.
ReplyDelete2. “My portraits are more about me than they are about the people I photograph.” A quote said by Richard Avedon, explains the passion of the photographer. The photo being taken, not only represents the characters in the image, but also represents the photographers view point. A photograph can describe an artist’s mind set and background. The ways portraits are taken give a photographer their own style. It shows their skills and ideas of capturing a good photo.
3. “You don't take a photograph, you make it.” ~Ansel Adams
In this quote Ansel Adams explains the art in taking pictures. As a photographer, you are not simply capturing an image. Instead you are setting up the scene to your movie. It’s the body to your essay and captured only by that photographer. Photographers take their pictures by capturing an image they’ve put together. Once arranged the way the artist desires, the image captured is not just took but made.
4. A quote stated by John Berger says, “All photographs are there to remind us of what we forget. In this - as in other ways - they are the opposite of paintings. Paintings record what the painter remembers. Because each one of us forgets different things, a photo more than a painting may change its meaning according to who is looking at it.” This quote exemplifies the importance of photography. They are recordings of history. They reenact the battles and experiences that we once faced. Berger argues that a picture better changes its meaning, as opposed to a painting. In my eyes they both do the same thing. As, according to John, a painting records things remembered and a photo records things that are forgotten they both retain the information that was once upon a time. Similarly to paintings, the meaning of photos can vary depending upon the viewer.

1. I think that the quote is saying that people take photos and use photography to show all the emotion as it is in general not by the opnion of the person painting it.
ReplyDelete2. I think that the quote is saying that the photo may be of someone else but all the emotion implied and everything about the photo is direct feelings of the person actually taking the photos.
3. I believe that this photo is saying that every photo you take isn't just you taking a photo it's you making the emotion and feeing come to life by making it appear the way you want.
4. This quote is saying that photos are exact memories from the past and can bring back the exact emotion that you felt in the momnet you took the photo whereas a painting is what the painters remember of the painting and your thoughts on the painting.
“Photography records the gamut of feelings written on the human face, the beauty of the earth and skies that man has inherited, and the wealth and confusion man has created. It is a major force in explaining man to man.” ~Edward Steichen
ReplyDeleteThe quote demonstrates how photography is one of the best ways to show who oneself is as a person and photographer. Also it demonstrates how photography is a great way to communicate with one another.
I just think it's important to be direct and honest with people about why you're photographing them and what you're doing. After all, you are taking some of their soul.” ~Mary Ellen Mark
I think this quote is very true. You don’t feel the same when tell a different veil about your photography. You don’t unveil the picture.
“My portraits are more about me than they are about the people I photograph.” ~Richard Avedon.
I also agree with Richards quote. The way you photograph a person describes you. The angle, composition, brightness, etc.
“You don't take a photograph, you make it.” ~Ansel Adams
When you take a photograph you take it with your eyes. When you make a photograph you make it with your heart and feeling.
“All photographs are there to remind us of what we forget. In this - as in other ways - they are the opposite of paintings. Paintings record what the painter remembers. Because each one of us forgets different things, a photo more than a painting may change its meaning according to who is looking at it.” ~John Berger.
The quote explains that photographs remind us of what we forget, and I agree because if you see a photograph it reminds you of memories you once had, that you didn’t remember.
